MORE 3D Scanning For Free!

A few months ago I posted a video on how to 3D scan objects with just your camera and some free software.  The downside was that that software can be a little complicated and requires a powerful computer to get the job done in a reasonable amount of time.

Recently I came across similar software that does the same thing, but a little easier, though it does have some drawbacks. The first is that it’s made by autodesk and I hate the idea of recommending something they made.  Next, it always decimates the mesh and sometimes you need a really high res mesh. All of the heavy processing is done on their servers, which can be a blessing and curse.  You don’t have to do it on your own machine so you can do other things and it doesn’t matter how fast your PC is. On the down side It can take a while. Depending on how busy their servers are, it could take 20 minutes or it could take a day, which could be a problem if you’re on a job and have a time budget. It’s also still in beta so things might not go as planned.

With all that in mind it does a pretty decent job, requiring minimal clean up when finished.   Let’s just hope that it remains free when the beta is over.

Here’s a tutorial I made!
